Kate Sylvester Presents Gloria Gloria

‘I want to sit in the back of Max’s Kansas City drinking Martinis with Gloria & Gloria.
Their best buddies Joyce Carol Oates & Dorothy Pitman Hughes would join us – we’d be so witty and ballsy and brainy – we’d be our very own superstars & Andy would be jealous.’

Drawing inspiration from two iconic Gloria’s, Kate Sylvester’s Autumn Winter 24 collection Gloria Gloria imagines an unlikely friendship between artist, designer and socialite Gloria Vanderbilt and feminist activist and journalist, Gloria Steinem. The collection evokes an independent spirit, bringing together two women who epitomize all the glorious, gritty glamour of ‘70s New York – before Giuliani cleaned it up.

The palette presents olive greens, wine reds and deep blues muted with smoke and camel and interspersed with pops of coral, teal, geranium pink and lavender.

Kate’s larger than life take on denim features an oversized belted denim trench layered over a box-shaped vest and the tailored wide-leg Steinem trouser. All are embroidered with the Kswan monogram, giving a nod to the fashion empire that was Gloria Vanderbilt Jeans.

The collection pays tribute to the effortless 70s style that is synonymous with Steinem. Slouchy checkerboard knitwear is elevated with a luxe sheen and is paired with an oversized wool blazer in olive green tones. Picture Steinem leading an editorial meeting at Ms. Magazine wearing a turtleneck with a burgundy patchwork style leather coat and her trademark sunglasses.

Vanderbilt’s influence of New York sophisticate is revealed through a wardrobe featuring luxe fabrics and floral motifs, showcasing the opulence and glamour of a life on the Upper East Side. A wine-red shift dress with an adjustable ruffled neckline and tailored wool suiting in coral personifies the timeless elegance of Gloria’s style. Kate draws on Vanderbilt’s artistic life with a satin jumpsuit reminiscent of her painting uniform and an intricately pleated dress in reference to her collection of garments by Parisian couturier Mariano Fortuny.

Balancing the glamour of Vanderbilt and the irreverent effortlessness of Steinem, Gloria Gloria is a collection that is both polished and progressive, exploring the apposing worlds of uptown and downtown. Set to a backdrop of ‘70s New York City, ‘Gloria Gloria’ celebrates the determination of these two strong, artistic women and how they made their mark.
